I have lived in Berlin for almost 18yrs. It is a very beautiful area. I grew up in Maine. My only complaint is why do you have to go up on the taxes every yr. I would think if you would try to budget things a little more, you wouldn't have to have the taxes so high.

If the people were willing to let some businesses come into the area there would be some employment.

I left Berlin in 1968. My parents wanted our lives to be better than theirs and encouraged their children to go to college. Brown Company could only hire so many Engineers, so I found employment in Southern New Hampshire. I have a special place in my heart for Berlin. I periodically visit my few remaining relatives buy sausage at Sinibaldi's and Syrup on Cates Hill. There is tourism all around Berlin but not in Berlin. I would like to see that gap closed. I agree with your mayor. A smoke stack in the middle of the City is not appealing to visitors. However Berlin will not prosper without tax generating busines and industry. But it needs to be located in specific areas not to interfere with a beautified downtown area which includes the Mill site.Business could be located at this site if it blends with the natural surroundings of Berlin's beautiful valley.
If Errol can have shopping geared toward the sportsmen, so can Berlin. If Conway can have hotels, shopping areas, and fine restaurants, so can Berlin. If India can provide Internet technical services, so can Berlin. It Germany can provide alternative energy sources such as Solar(I envision Wind generated and hydro Electric power for you) to its surrounding communities as an income source, so can Berlin. You now have an ATV Park. Businesses could spin off of that. Snowmobiles are very popular. There are businesses associated with this product.
One thing is certain. Tax generating business will need to come first. And if properly planned with tourism as part of the equation, tousism will be become part of the mix.
Good Luck to you all. It is not easy with many obstacles to overcome. I'm cheering for you and have faith in your resolve.

I moved to Berlin in 2006 .I have been coming to this city since 1976 , I fell in love with the old charm of the city .I waited till retired and moved up to Berlin .I'm sorry about the jobs that were lost because of the mills that shut down, but I'm just wondering if the mill property could be used for a place like cabala's sporting store I think a place like that would be great it would help the economy plus bring jobs to the area they built one in the middle of nowhere now there hotels and restaurants a lot of people are working be cause of the place. I think if we can find a business like that it would help. Maybe lower our taxes

I feel it is important to develope some new forms of tourism or incentives for visitors that would result in revenue. I am not sure I would agree with a casino because of the increase crime that would result. We would have to expand our police, rescue, and fire personnel, hopefully at the cost to the casino.

I lived in Berlin most of my life. I moved away over 19 years ago and visit every year. Berlin will always be my home. I would like Berlin to succeed in this big decision that must be made very carefully.
A golf course is a good idea but would not produce enough jobs for the people of Berlin.
Please think of the following:
1. How many jobs could be created on this site
2. If you build it will they come.
3. How much revenue will be created for the city
4. Will this be a burden to the community after sometime ( crime ect.....)
And on and on........

A mixed use development sounds pretty good, but with no housing above ( there are enough apartment buildings and home in the city that need some TLC)

Also a couple of hotels would create jobs and bring people to Berlin who in turn will spend in Berlin.
Please don't forget if the people in Berlin cannot survive in Berlin they will move away and the ever lurking ghost town from bad decisions will linger!
