I am a graduate student of architecture at Boston Architectural College, currently working on my thesis. I am an avid hiker and outdoors lover and have fallen in love with the town of Berlin.

I was saddned years ago when I heard about the mill closing. I do not live in Berlin, but I can imagine the emotional and psychological impact it had on the town.

For my thesis, I have decided to create a master plan for the former mill site. I would like to incorporate a program in the design that would:
-clean the brownfield/superfund sites in Berlin
-revitalize the town by bringing tourists to Berlin
-provide jobs for local residents
-recycle as much of the old mill as possible (keeping the smoke tower intact, as it is an icon of the town)
-implement systems within the program that would directly benefit the town/surrounding environment (this is going back to the "givining back to nature" theme)

But as I am not a resident of the town, I dont know what the town NEEDS. I have read several of the blogs above, and it appears that a place for the community, such as a recreation center, but I'd like to hear some feedback from the townspeople.

As this is a hypothetical project - I suppose I could propose anything to the University for my thesis, but I would like to actually propose a program that COULD work.

I appreciate any comments or suggestions you might have or any information on the site that I could use for my thesis.

Thank you!

And still no initiative, from the City, to improve the curb appeal of the Burgess site. Just leave it the way it is, ggod enough..... Berlin deserves this site to look better. City employees, IBEW and PSNH have secured an industrial future for this site, against the wishes of the community, can't they at least make an effort to better present this site to Belins citizens and potential future new residents?

This petition prepared by the Success Pond owners needs circulation assistance in addition to your family's signatures. I am unable to post the petition page for signatures here for some reason, but make your own petition page for signatures and please try to get as many pages filled as possible. At the top of the petition page it should state "Petition for Conservation of Success Township Lands", then in separate columns below this heading, the following words should be written; Printed Name, Street Address, City, State, Signature.

The Honorable Senator Judd Gregg
60 Pleasant St.
Berlin, NH 03570

RE: Petition for Conservation of Success Township Lands

Dear Senator Gregg,

My endorsement of this petition signifies my request that you support the Forest Legacy application to the State of New Hampshire for conservation with an easement of the Success property owned by T.R.Dillon and Son. We also request that you strongly support the purchase from the Dillons of the Success Township – Mahoosuc Gateway project along the Appalachian Trail using federal funding with $2.75 million of Land and Water Conservation Fund dollars. These Success Township lands, totaling 20,000 acres are a large intact tract that offers significant forest economy and recreational potential. The proximity to Berlin and Gorham make this property important for future fiber and energy needs of the area.

As presented in the attached detail “Success – a Conservation Opportunity” description, the Conservation Fund currently holds an option to acquire the Success property in phases by fee and easement, and has been working diligently with leaders in the local communities and in Coos County. The project enjoys strong local support and is integral to the vision of North Country revitalization. The first phase is the Success Township – Mahoosuc Gateway project that seeks to protect 4700 acres of rugged mountains along six miles of the Appalachian National Scenic Trail (AT). This land and several side trails off the Success Pond Road that access this area would be in National Park Service ownership for the AT, to be managed by the White Mountain National Forest.

The second phase, the Forest Legacy application for 15,200 acres, is part of a larger project to conserve the entire tract, linking these with other conserved lands in New Hampshire and Maine. An easement on this land would offer myriad opportunities for sustainable timber harvesting, wood to energy potential, permanent hunting, fishing and trapping access and potential motorized and non-motorized recreation opportunities. In addition to important conservation of water quality and wildlife habitat, the lands could afford education opportunities in forestry and recreation management to local schools and colleges. It would be important for a consortium of users to work to ensure maintenance of the Success Pond Road with a dedicated funding mechanism. It is also important for those individuals that have leases and camps, on Dillon’s property, to be allowed to continue to do so.

We recognize that these are fiscally challenging times and federal funding is competitive, however, the future for Coos County and in particular Success Township would benefit significantly by conservation of these lands. Please do all you can to conserve Success in fee and easement. This is an important project, not only to Coos County, but also to the North Country.

Now is the time to act to preserve our way of life in the North Country.

Sincerely,

Petition Endorsers

I had been looking into purchasing a home in Berlin and can find utility rates listed from various sources, but I can't find any info on typical usage. Can anyone tell me from the own experience what the typical monthly electric bill or kwh usage might be for a single family house using cooking, lights. and elec dryer? How about a typical bill or water usage for the same home that also uses a washer? I wasn't able to find any information on average annual sewer bills, so any info is greatly appreciated. Feel free to send replies to my email KMumford1976@gmail.com.

Thanks,
